Everything you need to know about FocusGuard
FocusGuard is a Chrome extension that helps you maintain deep focus by blocking distracting websites during focus sessions. It integrates with Google Calendar so you can start a focus session directly from any calendar event with one click.
Connect your Google Calendar and see your upcoming events in the extension popup. Click "Start Focus" on any event to begin blocking distracting websites for that event's duration. You can also start manual sessions anytime or use the keyboard shortcut (Alt+Shift+F).
FocusGuard is calendar-integrated. Your Google Calendar events appear right in the extension—just click to start a focus session tied to that event's duration. It also tracks your focus sessions, completion rates, and streaks so you can measure your productivity over time.
Three ways: (1) Click "Start Focus" on any calendar event in the popup, (2) Start a manual session with a custom duration, or (3) Use the keyboard shortcut Alt+Shift+F to quickly start a session on your next calendar event.
Yes! You can start manual focus sessions with custom durations anytime. However, calendar integration lets you tie sessions to your actual schedule, making it easier to protect your planned work time.
Currently Chrome, Brave, Edge, and other Chromium-based browsers. Safari and Firefox versions are planned.
Once you've started a focus session, blocking works offline. Calendar sync and license validation require internet. Your focus sessions and statistics are stored locally on your device.
Install the extension and start using it immediately. Full access to all features. No credit card required. Trial is tied to your device, so reinstalling won't give you a new trial. After 14 days, purchase a plan to continue.
Currently Google Calendar only. We're evaluating Outlook and Apple Calendar for future releases.
All your upcoming Google Calendar events (except all-day events) appear in the extension popup. Click "Start Focus" on any event to begin a focus session for that event's duration. Any event can be a focus session—meetings, deep work blocks, whatever you choose.
You choose! Start with our curated lists (Social Media, News, Entertainment) or add custom sites. Block entire domains or specific pages.
When you try to visit a blocked site, you can bypass it by writing a 100-character justification explaining why. This temporary bypass lets you through while creating accountability. The site returns to being blocked after you navigate away.
You'll see a gentle reminder that you're in a focus session with the option to continue with a 100-character justification. This builds awareness without being punitive.
Yes. FocusGuard uses "soft locks" not hard blocks. Write a 100-character justification explaining why you need to break focus. This creates accountability while remaining flexible.
Yes, but you need to enable it first. Go to Chrome's extension settings (chrome://extensions), find FocusGuard, click "Details", and toggle "Allow in Incognito". This is a Chrome security requirement for all extensions.
Every calendar-based or manual focus period is tracked. We measure session length, completion rate (% of time stayed focused), and streaks.
The percentage of your focus session you stayed focused without breaking. A 30-minute session with 24 minutes of focus = 80% completion rate.
Yes. View all past sessions, completion rates, total focus time, and your current streak in the Statistics section.
Visiting a blocked site (even with justification) or manually ending a session early counts as breaking focus and lowers your completion rate.
Yes! Whether you start a session from a calendar event or as a manual session, all focus time is tracked equally in your statistics.
14 days with full access to all features. No credit card required.
The extension will prompt you to enter a license key. Purchase a plan and you'll receive your key instantly via email. Paste it in and continue using FocusGuard.
No. Trials are tied to your device hardware. Reinstalling or clearing data won't give you a new trial.
Individual ($4.99/mo): 1 user, 3 devices. Team plans (Core, Pro, Team, Scale): Multiple users share one license, each gets 2 devices. Team owners can invite members and manage access.
Yes! Purchase a new plan and your account automatically upgrades or downgrades. For team plans, your existing team is updated with the new seat count—no need to start over.

Team plans give you a single license key that multiple people can use. As the team owner, you invite members via email. They install the extension, enter their email, and it auto-activates with your team's license.
Depends on the plan:
From your team dashboard, click "Invite Team Members", enter their email, and they'll receive an invitation. They click accept, install the extension, and it auto-activates.
No! After accepting your invite and installing the extension, they just enter their email and it auto-detects they're on your team. Zero friction.
Click the "Manage Team" button in the extension popup, or go directly to focusguard.app/team-dashboard and login with your email. You'll receive a magic link for passwordless access.
No. All blocking and tracking happens locally. Team owners can see member count and seat usage, but never individual browsing history or focus sessions.
Each team member gets 2 devices. If they try to activate a 3rd device, they'll need to deactivate one first.
You can't invite more members than your plan allows. If you hit 10/10 seats, you'll need to upgrade to Pro (20 seats) or remove a member first.
Yes. From your team dashboard, click "Manage Members" and remove anyone. This frees up a seat immediately.
Remove them from your team dashboard. Their extension will stop working and the seat becomes available for someone new.
Yes! Simply purchase the new plan you want and your existing team will be automatically updated to the new seat count. Your license key stays the same, and all members remain—no need to re-invite anyone.
If you downgrade from 20 to 10 seats but have 15 members, you'll need to remove 5 members before the downgrade completes. The system will warn you first.
All blocking happens locally on your device. Calendar event data is encrypted in transit. We never see your browsing history. Only metadata (member count, seat usage) is stored server-side. Read our Privacy Policy.
Locally on your device. Focus sessions, completion rates, and statistics never leave your browser. We can't see what you're focusing on or when.
Calendar read access (to detect focus events), tabs (to know what site you're on), storage (to save settings), and notifications (to remind you about upcoming focus). We never collect personal data.
Only event titles and times are cached locally for offline use. We never upload calendar data to our servers. All calendar access happens directly between your browser and Google.
No. Even on team plans, all blocking and tracking is local. Team admins only see member count and seat usage—never individual activity.
Local data (sessions, stats) remains on your device. Server data (team membership) is retained for 30 days in case you resubscribe, then permanently deleted.
Not currently, but we're considering it. Email us if you're interested in contributing.
Yes. Cancel through your team dashboard under "Manage Billing" or email us. No questions asked. You'll retain access until the end of your billing period.
